Guest Speaker: Melbourne writer, lawyer and teacher, Alice Pung.
The author of Her Father’s Daughter and Unpolished Gem, and the editor of Growing up Asian in Australia, Alice has received enormous critical acclaim for her writing. Unpolished Gem won the 2007 Australian Newcomer of the Year award in the Australian Book Industry Awards and was shortlisted for several other awards, including the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards and The Age Book of the Year 2007. Unpolished Gem has been translated into other languages and is also published in the UK and US. Alice has had stories and articles published in Good Weekend, Meanjin, the Monthly, The Age, The Best Australian Stories and The Lifted Brow.
In 2008, Alice was the Asialink writer-in-residence at Peking University, and in 2009, she was the Australian representative at the Iowa International Writing Program. She has given guest lectures at Brown University, Vassar College, Peking University, and the Universities of Bologna, Milano and Pisa. In 2010, she was a judge for the Walkley Awards for Journalism, and the 2011 Australian representative to the US Department of State ‘Fall and Recovery’ writers’ tour of disaster and conflict sites of America. Alice is currently the Artist-in-Residence at Janet Clarke Hall, and Patron of the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia.

Guest Speaker: Jane Hutcheon
Jane Hutcheon is the presenter of a weekly interview program One Plus One and on the ABC’s news channel, ABC News 24, which launched in August 2010.
Prior to that, she was an international television correspondent for more than a decade based in China, the Middle East and Europe.
As a news presenter, Jane has been in the chair covering the unfolding of the Arab Spring and the fall of Hosni Mubarak, Japan’s Tsunami, Cyclone Yasi, the Christchurch Earthquake and the Norwegian mass shooting.
As a foreign correspondent, she’s covered events including the Hong Kong Handover (1997), Israeli-Palestinian conflict (2000), the aftermath of the Iraq invasion (2003-2005), Hurricane Katrina (2005), and the 2006 Israeli-Lebanon War.
Apart from her experience as a presenter and a correspondent, she has developed a reputation as an engaging and incisive interviewer, building One Plus One into a solid addition to the rolling news coverage on the ABC’s news channel. It was the first ABC News 24 program to be aired on ABC 1.
Recent interviewees have included: Anthony Warlow, John Pilger, Geoffrey Robertson QC, Edward de Bono, chef Rick Stein, ethicist Julian Savulescu and best-selling American author Annie Proulx.
Beyond her television work Jane is a published author (From Rice to Riches, 2003,2005) an experienced and authoritative moderator, panellist and public speaker.

Event Details: Guest speaker, Khadija Gbla Khadija is the 2011 Advantage SA Young South Australian of the Year for her work among the state’s refugee community. She was born in Sierra Leone and her family sought refuge in Australia in 2001 after enduring a thirteen-year civil war in their homeland. She strives to combine her African and Australian heritage and values in order to advocate acceptance and equality within the community. Khadija is a silent achiever; a young girl on the move. Among many other things, she is an active member of the “Youth Parliament” program in South Australia. She is studying Law and International Studies at Flinders University. Cost: $28.00 per person
