Throughout the Pacific region, women producers constitute the majority of traders in local fresh produce markets. Largely, these markets lack basic seating, toilets and water supply. Many women, sitting on the ground, are exposed to these conditions for up to 12 hours per day. UN Women's market improvement program strengthens women vendors in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, so that they may empower themselves through dialogue with local governments, sensitising authorities to gender issues and influencing policies and plans for market improvement.
